Playing Sports with Foot Injuries

Many types of foot injuries affect athletes over the course of their athletic career. Despite their setbacks, many of these athletes will continue to play with mild foot injuries and attempt to ‘push’ through the pain. In order to be able to prevent injuries, it is important to stretch before any activity, wear proper footwear and replace shoes as needed. Some of the foot injuries athletes are at risk for include:

  • Turf toe- upward bending of the big toe outside normal range of motion
  • Stress Fractures
  • Overpronation- excessive foot movement during gait
  • Plantar Fasciitis- swollen ligament in the foot’s base
  • Strains

For more serious injuries it is recommended to consult with a podiatrist or orthopedic specialist as fractures and other serious conditions may require surgery.

fungal toenail2Arian Foster of the Houston Texans suffered an Achilles tendon injury while running a pass pattern and immediately fell to the ground following suit. Foster has had groin, hamstring, and calf injuries, which prevented him from playing in a full season since 2012. Texans coach Bill O’Brien has no details on the injury yet but believes “ ‘it obviously didn’t look good.’ ” If the injury is too severe, it can end Foster’s rest of the season.

Anyone can wind up suffering from heel pain. If you have any concerns regarding gout, consult with one of our podiatrists from Michigan Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Causes of Heel Pain

● Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

● Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

● Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

- Wearing ill-fitting shoes

- Wearing non-supportive shoes

- Weight change

- Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a thing of the past.

With the advancements in technology and greater knowledge of how muscles and joints work, physical therapists can turn things around dramatically.

Causes and Treatments of Heel Pain

plantar-fasciitis6Heel pain can be caused by several different reasons, but one particular condition to look out for is plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis results when the tissue between your heel bone and toes, called the plantar fascia, becomes inflamed. This can be caused by factors such as weight, your age, and the kind of physical activity you do. Women are more prone to plantar fasciitis than men, and it is important that the condition is treated when diagnosed. Some treatment options include physical therapy, exercising programs, deep tissue massage, wearing orthopedics, and surgery.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you have any concerns regarding gout, consult with one of our podiatrists from Michigan Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

·     Excessive running

·     Non-supportive shoes

·     Overpronation

·     Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

·     Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices

·     Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis

·     Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

toenail-fungus7A new study has discovered that sleep apnea may increase the risk of developing gout and experiencing gout flare ups. Lead author Yuqing Zhang of the Boston University Clinical Epidemiology Research and Training Unit shared that while obesity plays an important role in both sleep apnea and gout, sleep apnea still increased the risk for gout even when weight was considered. Over a one-year period 270 cases of gout were observed, with 76 in the sleep apnea group and 194 in the larger comparison group. Gout was nearly twice as common in the sleep apnea group in contrast to the comparison group.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you have any concerns regarding gout, consult with one of our podiatrists from Michigan Foot and Ankle Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

What is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

athletes-foot9A recent British study has found that fatality risks among females ages 37 to 78 who sat and did not engage in leg-swinging for over 7 hours or more at a time have a 30% higher fatality risk than those who sat for five hours or less. Among those who habitually fidget however, no increases were observed regardless of how long one sat. The researchers concluded that foot tapping and leg jiggling may reduce the fatality risk among those who sit for long periods of time. Sedentary behavior has been known to cause a decline in the function of blood vessels, which can negatively affect circulation. Foot tapping and leg jiggling can promote circulation, as the legs are constantly moving.

Poor circulation is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of Michigan Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. It usually restricts the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development.

It can also cause:

-muscle pain      -numbness in legs

-cramps             -skin discoloration

-weakness          -slower nail & hair growth

-stiffness            -erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes and or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, or who are over 50.

If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD, and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

As always see a doctor as they will help try and fit a regime that suits you. A doctor will also prescribe you medication which will help for PAD.

corns2Following his foot surgery after his week 1 injury, Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant underwent PRP injection therapy to help speed up his recovery process. "The fact that he can do that (injection therapy) is a positive. This was not something to address something that was a surprise or anything. It was something to get him some additional strength,” says owner Jerry Jones. Despite this, there is still no definite timetable on when the star receiver will return.

Most common injuries

People who are constantly on their feet are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is important to take part in physical therapy in order to get back on the right track quickly.

What to do when injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. This is important for those wanting to get back into the game quickly. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

During physical therapy you will undergo regimented training to get back into full form. Training is often very difficult, especially at first when the foot feels weak. These are some steps physical therapy often involves:

  1. Basic stretching & twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.
  2. Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.
  3. Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.

With the advancements in technology and greater knowledge of how muscles and joints work, physical therapists can turn things around dramatically.

Arthritis5A new virus transmitted by mosquitos inflicts its victims with symptoms extremely similar to rheumatoid arthritis. Because of this development, the virus known as Chikungunya may hold information on how to eliminate RA. "Studying Chikungunya arthritis can give us insight into the immunological mechanisms that drive joint inflammation," Miner said. "And maybe someday turn off the pain and inflammation millions of arthritis sufferers live with every day."

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are suffering from arthritic foot pain, contact one of our podiatrists of Michigan Foot and Ankle. Our podiatrists can treat your foot and ankle needs.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves inflammation of different joints in your body, such as in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. On top of this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help to temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

runningReplacing your running shoes after a long amount of mileage with them is essential to preventing injury and maintaining foot health. Aaron Burke, an engineer who understands the battles of suffering an injury after choosing the wrong shoe or wearing one pair for too long, created MINO. Mino is a slim device installed under the sock liner of a new pair of shoes. After 300-500 miles, or 600 compressions whether walking or running with the shoe, Mino will inform you that it is time to change the shoe. Since over wearing shoes can cause foot problems and other injuries, Mino is a protective device for your feet.

Choosing the right running shoe may essentially be different for every person. If you have any concerns feel free to contact one of our podiatrists of Michigan Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Choosing the Right Running Shoes for Your Foot Type

Running is a physical activity although fun, can put a lot of stress on the joints, bones and ligaments of the body. Injury and stress on the foot can be an important factor on which kind of shoe you’re wearing. Running shoes should be worn based on your foot type. It is important to find out what fits you based on cushioning, stability and motion.

Determining your type

Speak with a shoe specialist or retail professional to see what your foot type is. They will be able to identify and measure your arch type, stride and gait.

Running Mechanics

When you are running or walking in your shoes, every step determines how your foot is landing. Pronation is the natural rolling of your ankle from outside to inside during foot strike.

Pronation is a correct form of walking or running. It helps absorb shock and store energy from your lower extremities. Neutral runners who pronate correctly do not need specific shoes, since they have stability and control.

Over-pronators

Those who run with excessive ankle rolling. Over-pronators tend to have ankles that angle inward, flat feet, and or bowed legs. This can cause a series of injuries: of the knees, ankles and Achilles tendons.

Under-pronation

Under-pronation is less common than over-pronation. This usually happens to those who have inflexible feet and high arches. Even though there is less rotational stress on the ankles and knees, it prevents any kind of shock absorptions. Under-pronation needs shoes with increase in cushion and flexibility.

Surgery Not the Only Option for Hammertoes

corns2Many patients often have the misconception that conditions such as hammertoes can only be treated and cured through surgery. But such minor conditions can effectively be managed with treatments such as ultrasound-guided injections, which send anti-inflammatory medication directly to the source of pain, and shock wave therapy, which promotes soft-tissue healing. Physical therapy and insoles that ease pressure on the foot are other nonsurgical treatments that have proven successful.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. If you are suffering from hammertoes, contact one of our podiatrists of Michigan Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

  • Genetics – people who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
  • Arthritis – because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
  • Trauma – direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
  • Ill-fitting shoes – undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

  • Orthotics – custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
  • Medications – oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
  • Surgery – in more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

If you have any questions please contact our offices located in Ferndale, Milford, and Commerce Township, MI. We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
